Subject: SLIP access in Pittsburgh or Concord area (California)
Guys,
I've just recently moved to Pittsburgh, California. Does anyone please have
a number to dial in there or its surrounding areas (Concord, Walnut Creek, or
Martinez) so that I can save long distance calling costs whenever I want to
get SLIP access?
Your attention is greatly appreciated. Thanx

There must be more to it than just NetManage's winsock. I've used every
Win Mosaic since the first with no problem. Of course, I'm dedicated TCP/IP
with no slip/ppp or anything else in the way. Not even a network operating
system to bugger things up. I suggest you search somewhere in your
hookup situation first for an answer. But since I don't know anything about
that, I can't help you.
Just rest assured that Win Mosaic *does* work with NetManage's winsock.dll.
Two different computers can't be wrong!

I appreciate the suggestions. (I also learned that Chameleon's telnet
supports this.) Only problem is all of these to some degree imply setting
up a suite of functions besides telnet. Can any of these be acquired/loaded
as discrete telnet-only icons? All I'm trying to do here is give my users
scripted access to our library catalog.

Subject: ALL SLIP USERS AND WINSOCK DEVELOPERS SHOULD READ THIS!!!
I think that developers of programs using the winsock interface should
start to realize that many users have SLIP connections to the net and this
imposes some extra requirements on their programs.
I will now make some examples: I invite all interested SLIP users to
follow up with more examples of what they need and, of course,
the developers to fulfill their requests. Thanks in advance to all!
MAIL.
I think this is an area in which we already have what we need.
I should be able to go online, collect all incoming mail and quit the
connection. Then, offline, I should be able to read mail, compose replies and
new messages and save them. Next time I get the connection I should be able
to send quickly the saved outgoing messages.
Eudora and Pegasus, for example, already give us these possibility, and so
it's all right.
NEWS.
Also in this case, what I need is a program that allows me to go on line,
quickly collect the articles I am interested to, and quit.
Then, offline, I should be able to read the saved articles, compose replies
and followups and save them. When later I will go online I should be able to
post all saved stuff.
Here we have Trumpet and Winvn that insist on getting the connection with the
server everytime they come up, and so, even if they allow to save read
articles they wouldn't do the job. (Please correct me if I am wrong).
NFS.
I posted an article on this subject some days ago and got some replies, but
I am not satisfacted about them. Again, what I need is to fire up my
WfW 3.11 (with 32 bit file and disk access on), start (from inside Windows)
a SLIP connection, say with Peter's Winsock, then (and only then!) start
one NFS client and get the remote disk(s) accessible in File Manager.
Is it possible? I don't know, I'm just asking...
Bye.
Marco
